René Boorman
Artist Statement
As a gender-nonconforming queer punk growing up in the Midlands, I didn't get to see many people like me. I always drew, I always painted, from the second I was able - it was my way of coping - but it was not until I began engaging with the world of fine art that I truly realised: not conforming is nothing to be ashamed of.

The way I practice my art speaks to the distressed child I once was, and calls out to those who feel that lack of community. Themes of ill mental health, identity, queerness, and emotional vulnerability are often present in my artwork, which manifests in a diverse range of materials and processes (including sculpture, drawing, installation, and printmaking).

My work can often become political; living in a world where my existence is becoming increasingly politicised, I feel it would be a disservice to myself, my friends, and those who came before me to not utilise my position as a practicing artist as best I can.

Most importantly, I believe art is for everyone.
